PUHI — Kauai High School juniors Jack Machorek and Zachary Safford each broke two Kauai Interscholastic Federation records to lead the Red Raider boys to a top finish at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation swimming championships Saturday at the YMCA pool.
PUHI — Kauai High School juniors Jack Machorek and Zachary Safford each broke two Kauai Interscholastic Federation records to lead the Red Raider boys to a top finish at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation swimming championships Saturday at the YMCA pool.
Kapaa High School senior Grace Stokes entered the day with three qualifying swim standards and closed it by adding another qualifying swim for state-time standards in four of the five events she was scheduled to swim. Her performance helped the Kapaa lady swimmers pick up the team championship with 109 points.
The Kauai High School girls finished with 60 points followed by Island School at 29 points and Waimea High School girls at 12 points.
Machorek and Safford led the Kauai boys to an 85-point total, challenged by the Kapaa boys at 68 points and Island School coming up with 41 points.
“I already have a state time in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.96),” said Henry Scherer, an Island School sophomore. “I’m close to the 200-yard freestyle, so that’s my goal today — add that to the 500,” he said Saturday”
Scherer succeeded, touching the wall in the 200-yard freestyle at 1 minute, 53.86 seconds, bettering his seeded swim of 1:56.86 to secure the state-swim standard. He also bettered his 500-freestyle swim by more than a second (5:10.96 seed, 5:09.55 final), and ended the day with his third state time by swimming the opening leg of the boys 200-yard freestyle relay.
Kauai’s Machorek broke records in the boys 50-yard freestyle, touching at 22.06 to break a 1986 record set by Corey Carroll (22.31) while bettering his seeded 22.45 swim.
He also broke a 2016 KIF record (49.27) set by Akira Williams in the 100-yard freestyle by touching at 48.19, bettering his own record pace of 48.41.
Safford claimed KIF records in the 100-yard butterfly and in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the butterfly event, Safford touched at 52.52, bettering his own record (53.89) set in 2016. In the breaststroke event, he touched at 1:01.84, bettering the 1:04.21 record swim by Riley Young set in 2015.
