Downs a real lifesaver on Kauai
A huge mahalo to Dr. Monty Downs for his fine recent article in TGI about the KLA. He is the major force that runs this association and makes it and all its dedicated lifeguards the best in Hawaii.
And, remember that that Dr. Downs is also one of then finest medical doctors on Kauai as he takes care of not only the ocean victims in the emergency room at Wilcox hospital (the best hospital in Hawaii!) but all who need medical attention. Having been stitched up by Dr. Downs after a motorcycle accident some years ago, I can factually state that he is the best!
And thank you also to those many local heroes on surf and boogie boards who save the lives of those who swim and get in trouble where no guards are present.

Stop killing animals during weapons testing
Shamans, spiritual leaders, wise men and women all over our beautiful planet are speaking to all. We have about 50 years to correct and begin to heal our planet. Destroying our world and every living thing one by one and inch by inch is what is happening here and all over our planet.
We all agree that the Hawaiian Islands are very special. We haven’t yet been introduced to all the amazing species in and out of the water. I
was bewildered when I read this post: “Taking Marine Mammals Incidental to Long Range Strike Weapons Systems Evaluations Program” (published Jan. 6, 2017).
“Taking” means killing and harming marine life. The Air Force is requesting authorization to take marine mammals incidental to conducting munitions testing for their long range strike weapons systems evaluation program over the course of five years, from Sept. 1, 2017, through Aug. 31, 2022, in the Barking Sands Underwater Range Expansion area of the Pacific Missile Range Facility off Kauai.
It goes on to say, comments must be received by Feb. 6, 2017, and can be sent to ITP.McCue@noaa.gov or by mail to Jolie Harrison, Chief, Permits and Conservation Division, Office of Protected Resources, National Marine Fisheries Service. 1315 East-West Highway, Silver Spring, MD 20910-3225.
Not a good practice, killing while practicing and testing. This has been a military practice for many years. Can this ever be changed? Is a comment all that can be done to morph this tragic path into something positive?
Our planet can be saved, but not if humans continue to kill the ocean.
