PUHI — Jamie Gilleran was looking at what she called “the most beautiful day in the world” from the Safeway parking lot when it got even better Tuesday afternoon.
“I was just sitting there in my car and all the sudden, this gusher was like, going off,” she said.
A fountain of water fired more than 30 feet into the blue sky near Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School about 4 p.m. Gilleran said it was spectacular to see.
“I looked over and thought, ‘Oh my God,’” she said.
The Puhi resident quickly stepped from her car and began taking pictures with her smart phone to capture the images. One caught a silhouette of people standing at the base of spraying water. One even seemed to reflect a face.
“The sun behind it,was beautiful,” she said.
Gilleran, who just returned from a vacation to California where water is precious, quickly call 911.
“I’m sitting in the parking lot at Safeway and I’m telling you there’s a water main break,” she said she told a dispatcher. “It’s going 20 to 30 feet high.”
The water was “just coming out of the ground,” she said. There wasn’t a fire hydrant and there was no accident that she could see.
Police and fire officials rolled up in a few minutes. The gusher continued about 15 minutes before several people showed up and did something to shut it down.
They were the last guys to show up and they stopped the water,” she said.
“It was something to see,” Gilleran said. “Really, it was beautiful. It was a gusher.”
It was not known what the source of the water was when TGI went to press Tuesday night.
