KAPAA — Kapaa High School principal Daniel Hamada was surprised at the cost of shipping the new digital scoreboards that grace the walls of the Bernice Hundley Gym.
“I didn’t realize shipping cost that much for the scoreboards,” Hamada said. “The scoreboards with the latest technology cost enough, and to add the shipping?”
Hamada joined the Kapaa athletic director Greg Gonsalves, and coaches and students from the school’s basketball teams to thank Peter Nolan of the Stephanie and Peter Nolan Foundation for their contribution that made the new scoreboards become reality in time for the Kauai Interscholastic Federation basketball season.
“This is the latest in scoreboard technology,” Gonsalves said. “Kauai High School was smart — they worked the cost of the scoreboard into the cost of renovating their gym. But the cost was too much for us. We are lucky Mr. Nolan came forward to make this happen.”
When Nolan visited the campus Thursday, he got to meet with the grateful student-athletes as well as coaches.
“He had expressed an interest in getting involved with the scoreboard on the Ron Martin baseball field, too,” Gonsalves said. “When he visited, he gave us a check for $10,000 toward the baseball scoreboard. We already ordered it so it could be installed in time for the KIF baseball season.”
The KIF baseball season starts with the preseason Waimea High School Invitational from Feb. 1 through 4 at the Waimea High School and Hanapepe Stadium fields.
