• Thank youi, Red Cross, for the honor
I wish to thank the Kauai Chapter of American Red Cross, specifically Padraic Gallagher, for the honor of Tom and I receiving an award for service. And I wish to clarify several things.
We received this award because of showing up to open the Red Cross shelter at Hanalei School on Dec. 2. We have volunteered to do this whenever the bridge and road from Hanalei closes. We just have to be sure to make it over the bridge before that happens since we live in Princeville. It is not a big commitment and we are very new volunteers, but we are committed to our job.
We do not feel we need the award given us because on that day, most of our work was simply watching the incredible teachers and principal of Hanalei School take charge of 46 students that were stranded there. These teachers and the staff of the school did an amazing job of keeping the children organized and occupied and fed. One of parents of the school donated food and drinks for everyone stranded there … perhaps 60 people in all. That parent is the owner of Bar Acuda and Hanalei Bread Co. They were exceptionally generous with the food they donated and they need some great kudos for what they did for us all. Tom and I did not have anything to do with that donation. However, if we had all been at the school another hour, the Red Cross would have provided food and drink for everyone.
Again, to clarify, it is the teachers and principal of the school that deserve an award for their service which was truly above and beyond the scope of their teaching jobs.
