LIHUE — Priscilla Badua of the Kauai Island Labor Alliance said there were more people participating last year at the Dr. Martin Luther King Walk and Sign Holding in front of the Kukui Grove Center.
“Last year was the first time the Kauai Island Labor Alliance, a conglomeration of all the labor unions on Kauai, did an event honoring Martin Luther King,” Badua said. “We had a lot of people. Today, the weather must be too hot for people.”
About two dozen walkers, many representing the Hawaii Government Employees Association, took to the streets for a walk honoring Dr. King on Martin Luther King Day, a holiday for many working people on Kauai.
“Dr. King was a supporter of labor,” said Rose Domenden. “When he was assassinated, he was in Tennessee to support trash workers who did not have a union to help them.”
Badua said Dr. King led the way for many of the civil rights people take for granted, such as voting.
The walk started at the HGEA Kauai offices in Lihue, went up to the Kukui Grove Center for a short sign-waving period before walking back for lunch and fellowship.
