Ipo teaches me a lesson
Thank you for your Our View — “High Hopes for the New Year” — Jan. 4, that hoped for “every home should have a dog or cat just to make life better.”
Especially, thank you for the awesome story about Ipo on Nov. 2, 2016. I think Ipo’s “Dad” taking time to lay down in the sunshine will stay with me for forever, as a very important lesson. Take the time.
Pay attention to our pets that give us so much unconditional love, for the small amount we give back to them.
Now, when one of my cats (I used to have dogs) puts a paw up or wraps around my leg asking for attention, I take that three to five minutes to play with his “Da Bird” toy or give him a cuddle. If your dog wants attention, take the five minutes to throw a ball, give him/her at hug, or just sit with your buddy.
Three to five minutes is not too much time out of my life for our pets. We realize as we get older that they are not here with us, all that long.
Why can’t people learn to:
1) Make sure your pet doesn’t get lost by having him/her microchipped. It is the best form of identification ever, that cannot get lost.
2) Have your pet spayed or neutered. Both you and they will be happier.
3) Take your pet to your doctor (veterinarian) if you suspect an illness. They can check around for various prices and services here on-island.
It is our responsibility as owners/guardians to give them back, for all they give to us. There’s that unconditional love, again. It is time for us to stop and think and to treat our pets with more compassion, kindness, respect and care. It is time to stop shucking them aside, as if they have no worth or value, by throwing the cat out the door or kicking the dog outside.
