LIHUE — Two girls and five boys are undefeated in Kauai Interscholastic Federation wrestling following Saturday’s matches at the Kauai High School gym.
The individual and team championships are Saturday.
“Both Kauai and Kapaa have solid squads,” said Mac Pigott, KIF tournament director. “It might come down to who is cleared from injuries, stay healthy, and of course, individual performances in head-to-head Red/Green match ups.”
Kauai High School freshman Sarai Valdez in the 102-pound division, and junior Jordyn Kahananui in the 112-pound class show perfect 4-0 records following the match where wrestlers had a final opportunity to lock in their weight class classifications for the KIF championship tournament.
“The Kauai Red Raider girls team has won every KIF championship since the sport was sanctioned in 2012,” Pigott said. “However, the Kapaa girls are looking to make history Saturday at the KIF championships which start at 10 a.m. at the Kauai High School gym.”
Kauai High School sophomore Aukahi Kalama in the 138-pound class and senior Madison Leanio in the 160-pound division are undefeated in the season, Kalama touting a 2-0 record while Leanio is 3-0 in the season. Red Raider freshman Mason Stoll-Tolentino in the 113-pound class is 7-0 heading to the championships.
Waimea boy grapplers Corey Ageno, 6-0 in the 126-pound and 132-pound classes, and Andrew Evans, 7-0 in the 195-pound and 220-pound divisions, lead the corps of Menehune wrestlers.
The KIF wrestling championships wrap up the 2017 wrestling season with winners heading to the Chevron Hawaii High School Athletic Association 2017 state wrestling tournament at Neal Blaisdell Center on Oahu, Feb. 17 and 18.
