PUHI — Wes Perreira, warehouse supervisor for the Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch was glad the food came palletized and shrink-wrapped Monday.
“It’s a lot easier to handle than going through individual bags from the ‘Feed the Need’ food collection coordinated and hosted by the Safeway Stores,” he said.
The Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch accepted the final delivery for the food collection campaign that ran from October through Dec. 25 at Safeway stores in Hokulei Village and Kauai Village.
“Between the two stores, we had more than 6,000 bags of food,” said Lesah Merritt, Hokulei Village store manager. “This is way more than what we collected last year.” During the Feed the Need campaign, the Kauai Village store in Kapaa outdid the Lihue store, collecting 3,774 packages compared to the Lihue’s 2,787.
“This amounts to 6,561 packages of food contributed by Safeway shoppers,” Merritt said. “We truly appreciate the generosity of our shoppers who always come together whenever it comes to helping other people.”
Perreira said the Monday delivery was the second for the Feed the Need campaign. The first delivery netted 8,966 pounds of food, and the second delivery amounted to 39,711 pounds of food for a total of 48,677 pounds of food collected.
