Ted Fleming was lucky the clouds cleared the horizon when he got a photo of the green flash as the sun set over Rabbit Island from Mile Marker 4. The past couple of days have been great for trying for the green flash, and with the haze expected to remain through most of the weekend. It’s a nice challenge — just make sure you’re on the right side of the highway.
Waimea coach Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes had some samples of the Granex yellow sweet onions, and Sam Henriques, the Kapaa High School trainer, just happened to have her garden plot cleared. She got a bunch (Manny said his son loves raw onions), and maybe she’ll let her master gardeners know that Bunga will be doing free distribution of the seedlings on Jan. 21 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Waimea, Eleele and Lihue branches of First Hawaiian Bank. Maybe we’ll have another onion contest in about 60 days?
Mary Lu Kelley of People Attentive to Children wants people to have early notice on this year’s Parent and Child Fair being coordinated by Jeannie Odo at the Kukui Grove Center on April 8 (that’s Buddha Day). Stick it on your calendar so it doesn’t get overshadowed by other events.
And Stacie Chiba-Miguel is saying Jan. 28 is the Chinese New Year welcoming the Year of the Fire Rooster, so she has a Chinese lion already commissioned to celebrate the event along with the opening of Kumu’s Cupboard across the mall from Bread & Deli Connection.
