LIHUE — Andy Melamed, Kauai Lifeguard Association marketing director, said Etienne Aurelius of Aurelius Cinema has been the chosen filmmaker for an ocean safety video project.
Aurelius has an extensive background filming extreme water sports.
“He has a unique ability to capture the audience and tell award-winning stories through digital cinema and films,” Melamed said.
Aurelius will also use the talents of North Shore videographer Joel Guy as the project unfolds.
“The story line behind the new video will reinforce points that everyone should be aware of when going to the beach,” said KLA President Monty Downs. “The video has an opportunity to set a new standard for ocean safety even beyond our shores.”
Melamed developed the project and created the script. It will focus on:
1. Frequenting Kauai’s lifeguarded beaches for information about where to go for a safe day at the beach.
2. Identifying a rip current and what to do in case you are caught in one. Avoiding slippery rocks and crevices and hazards in close proximity to known flooding streams and shorelines.
3. How to use one of the 200 rescue tubes at many of Kauai’s unguarded beaches.
4. How to snorkel safely.
There have been four drownings in waters around Kauai this year. KLA is leading efforts to raise awareness for residents and visitors of the dangers of the ocean and to be careful during water activities.
Kauai lifeguards will appear in the video and the finished piece will premiere on video host Dickie Chang’s “Wala‘au” TV show. It will be shown on local visitor channels, on monitors in the Lihue Airport baggage claim areas, in hotels, resorts, timeshares and other businesses that wish to take part in spreading the word.
The project is sponsored in part by the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association. Another supporter is the Rotary Club of Kapaa.
Some businesses have expressed an interest in airing the new video. Lawai Beach Resort has committed to the snorkeling segment of the new video, while lifeguard towers, snorkeling and rip current features are available before production starts in late February.
