RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The University of Hawaii women’s golf team posted its best finish of the 2016-17 season, concluding the Battle at the Rock tournament in second place following Tuesday’s third and final round at the Oak Quarry Golf Club.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The University of Hawaii women’s golf team posted its best finish of the 2016-17 season, concluding the Battle at the Rock tournament in second place following Tuesday’s third and final round at the Oak Quarry Golf Club.
The Rainbow Wahine entered the day with a five-stroke lead over Cal Poly. However, UH shot a final round 310 to finish six strokes behind the Mustangs, who shot the day’s best round of 299. Hawaii played with only four golfers as senior Raquel Ek was forced to withdraw prior to the start of the round.
UH was led by senior Izzy Leung, who shot 76 and finished the tournament tied for fifth place at 8-over 224. Sophomore Kaci Masuda was two strokes back at 10-over 226 after a final round 77 to finish in a tie for 12th place.
Senior Daezsa Tomas tied for 25th at 230 while freshman Megan Ratcliffe tied for 35th in her UH debut with a 233 total.
Northern Arizona’s Sofia Anokhina fired even par 72 to capture medalist honors at level par 216, winning by five strokes over runner-up Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton (221).
Hawaii finished four strokes ahead of third place UC Riverside in the 15-team field, which included six Big West Conference teams. UH was seeking its fifth tournament title and just its second in the last 20 years.
The Rainbow Wahine will next host North Carolina State in a dual match on March 11 prior to the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, which will take place March 14-15.
