Sheila McNeill Honeywell
Sheila Honeywell of Lihue passed away on Feb. 2, 2017, at the age of 95. Sheila was born on March 9, 1921, in Glasgow, Scotland, and moved with her parents to Seattle, Washington, when she was 3.
In 2002 Sheila lost the love of her life, Valen, after almost 60 years of marriage. Kauai had been their second home, and upon his death Sheila made it her permanent home.
Sheila had a real flair and a very active social life. She loved playing bridge, flower arranging and reading. She stayed very current with her computer, iPad and cell phone. With e-mails, Facebook and Skype she stayed in touch with her four children: Mark (Diane), Erica Posner (Terry), Jock (Sylvie), and Scott, as well as her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Sheila will be greatly missed by her family and many loving friends.
At her request, there will be no service. In memory of Sheila, practice an “attitude of gratitude” today and each time you think of her.
Katherine Elaine Duarte Summers
Katherine Elaine Duarte Summers, formerly of Kapaa, passed away with the aloha pumehana of her ohana by her side on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, at the age of 84. Born on Sept. 29, 1932, Katherine was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents Odelia Duarte and Jacintho Duarte Sr., brothers, Edwin “Dosha” Duarte and Ernest Duarte, sister, Eleanor Almeida, and sons, Russell Marshall Jr. and Vernon “Kutchie” Marshall.
She is survived by her loving husband, William Summers, son, Michael (Melanie) Marshall, and five daughters, Katherine (Daniel) Kamai, Travan Kelekoma, Corinna Allenson, Kirstie (Martin Sr.) Banda and Harlynn (Richard) Rodriguez.
Surviving also are two brothers, Jacintho Jr. “Juni” (Carol) Duarte and Raymond (Stella) Duarte, and one sister, Gladys Oshita.
Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, more than 30 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
Celebration of life will be held in Orange, California.
James ‘JK’ Kennedy
James “JK” Kennedy 73, of Hanamaulu, Kauai, passed away on Jan. 18, 2017. He was born on Nov. 26, 1943, in Miami, Florida.
JK loved radio and was a disc jockey at WPDQ in Jacksonville, Florida, from the age of 15 to 21 when he moved to Hilo, Hawaii, to take a job at KPUA radio station. After a surf trip to Kauai in 1973, he accepted a position at KTOH, soon to become KQNQ, were he was instrumental in upgrading the station from AM to FM and started the concept of “Trade Radio.” He moved from radio to television in 1989 as the co-anchor of “Kauai Tonight” news show on Kauai Cable Channel 6. He brought the classified ads to television when he started the “JK Show” which included showing local events like the drags, motocross, fishing tournaments, graduation ceremonies, May Day and yes, even pig hunting.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Mac Dent, of Jacksonville, Florida.
A celebration of JK’s life will be held on Sunday, Feb. 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Troy’s Place in Lihue. Please bring a potluck dish and memories to share. For more information call Katie Beer, 635-3845, or Dickie Chang, 635-8800.
Yuriye Morinaka
Yuriye Morinaka of Hanamaulu passed away on Jan. 31 at the age of 93 at her residence.
Born on Aug. 13, 1923, in Huleia, she was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by her husband Saburo Morinaka.
She is survived by her sons Stanley (Colleen) Morinaka and Stanford (Cynthia) Morinaka of Kauai; daughters Delvina Marie (Jim) Reed of Washington and Lily Morinaka of Kauai, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, Feb. 16, at Lihue Christian Church.
Visitation is at 9:30 a.m., with service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
