LIHUE — Shoppers at the Kauai Culinary Market at The Shops at Kukuiula and Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College were treated to some pre-Valentine’s Day excitement and treats.
Excitement at the Kauai Culinary Market was heightened by the offering of a keiki activity station where Helaine Perel, manager of The Shops at Kukuiula, shepherded young keiki doing make-it-and-take-it cookie decorations with a Valentine flair.
Belinda Haefner of Minnesota had the first ticket entered into the giveaway box and, when hers was pulled, was presented with some Monkeypod Jam. Aletha Thomas of Monkeypod Jam was conducting the chef’s demonstration at the Kauai Culinary Market.
The Rancher’s Daughter, Sharleen Andrade, had steaks for Mike Stipe of Oregon and Jeff Mallett of Idaho, and Elvrine Chow of Heavenly Haku had a wristlet for Marsha Stipe of Oregon.
Kelsey Gorvin of Alberta, Canada, walked off with slices of pie from The Right Slice, and produce graced the arms of Marlo Holly of Oklahoma and Michelle Blai of Montana.
Joan Hanna of Kansas ended up with cupcakes, and Kauai’s own Jeanie Lutz scored coconut doughnuts. Debbie Dolem of Ohio was presented with tropical flowers, and honey went home with Regine Farher of California. Fran Fautenberger of Massachusetts was presented with locally made cookies to round out the sweet offerings at The Shops at Kukuiula.
The excitement overflowed to the Kauai Community Market, where celebrity chef Sam Choy dropped in, accompanied by Ike Cockett, manager of the Koloa Landing, and an entourage of Koloa Landing dignitaries.
“What started off as a stormy day turned out to be a great one,” said Melissa McFerrin-Warrack. “John Cabello is scheduled to have his new food truck, JC’s Puerto Rican Tacos, inspected Friday. This is a huge family affair which has taken a few years to build from the ground up. They are absolutely overjoyed and is a great example of the ‘incubator’ component of this Kauai Community Market. If all goes well with the inspection, the Cabello family plan a ‘soft launch,’ Saturday.”
After collating the contributions from the market vendors, more than 65 people signed up for the giveaways.
