WAILUA — Infatuation and intrigue, comedy and heartbreak, will take on a theatrical tone in a single performance Sunday at the Courtyard Marriott in Kapaa, just in time for a Valentine’s Day date night.
“Broadway in Love” is a show featuring Kauai singers Jessika Montoya, Kurt Last, Daphne Sanchez, Erin Gaines and Bud Soria, among others, and is a chance to have a night out on the town with that special someone.
“It’s about love and it’s everybody friendly,” said producer Greg Shepherd.
Featuring some cast members from “South Pacific,” the hour-and-a-half show is comprised of vignettes, and boasts about 24 songs in full Broadway style.
“I was in ‘South Pacific’ for almost 13 years, and I played opposite Greg,” said Cindy Labrador, one of the singers in the show. “A lot of us were involved in that.”
Their experience playing and singing together has made for a seamless show that oozes with chemistry.
“We all complement each other and work well together,” said Labrador, who also is the lead singer of the country western band Not My First Rodeo. “I get some of the more sassy numbers.”
Shepherd said the company chose the lineup of songs from a vast repertoire. They’ll be performing numbers like “New York, New York,” “On the Street Where You Live” and “Bali Hai,” as well as songs from the musicals “Rent,” “Chicago” and “Les Miserables.”
In between numbers, master of ceremonies Dickie Chang will offer a few traditional Hawaiian stories, as well as other stories and one-liners.
“It’s taken a lot of work to get to this point,” said pianist Monica Chung. “They’re so great to accompany, though; they make it easy.”
The troupe has been evolving over two years, according to Shepherd, and has been performing in an on-call basis for events at various venues around the island, including private homes.
“We’re still doing that and we’re still available,” Shepherd said.
On Sunday, the show will be accompanied by a buffet dinner offering romaine salad with lilikoi vinaigrette dressing, Molokai sweet potato salad, roasted Kalua pork, huli huli chicken, mahi mahi with miso soy glaze, and a tofu and stir-fried vegetable dish with white rice. Rice pudding and haupia will also be included as well as herbal teas and coffee.
A no-host bar will also be available.
“This is a great space and it’s a great show celebrating love,” Shepherd said. “It’s a great night for a date night or anniversary. It’s something romantic.”
Dinner is included in the ticket price. Tickets are $86 a person, with a kamaaina rate of $79 plus tax when purchased online in advance. At the door, if seats are available, tickets are $91. Seats are limited to 150 people.
