LIHUE — Juno Apalla, representing Leadership Kauai at the Small Business Fair Thursday, was thrilled to discover a line of Mardi Gras masks at the Maliakai Boutique table.
“I’m one of the newest members of the Zonta Club of Kauai,” Apalla said. “These masks go perfect for the club’s 24th annual Eat Dessert First coming up Feb. 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort.”
The fundraising event benefiting student scholarships and other Zonta Club community events has a theme of Mardi Gras Night, said Edie Igancio Neumiller.
“Eat Dessert First, sponsored in part by Inkspot Printing, is a Mardi Gras theme,” Igancio Neumiller said. “We are asking people to come dressed with masks and other Mardi Gras themed apparel. Mardi Gras colors are green, purple and gold. I got mine at Pier 1 Imports, but that was back in December. Folks are telling me they went, but couldn’t find anything they liked.”
Presale tickets for Eat Dessert First are available for $30 from Salty Wahine in Hanapepe, Hairmates on Akahi Street in Lihue, Island Ace Hardware in Princeville, Vicky’s Fabrics in Kapaa, and The Wine Shop in Koloa. Tickets will be available at the door for $35.
Mary Ann Ornellas, co-owner of Maliakai Boutique, said shoppers who bring in their pre-sale Eat Dessert First tickets will be offered a discounted price on the store’s line of Mardi Gras masks through Feb. 24.
Maliakai Boutique is located at 4353 Rice St., Lihue.
“This results in savings for not only the event, but for the masks as well,” said Apalla, who is in charge of online ticket sales at www.zonta-kauai.org/eat-dessert-first.
The night, hosted by The Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, will feature entertainment including Ron Margolis’ JAZZFIRE, a silent auction and a variety of desserts.
The Kauai Photo Frenzy booth will help capture the Mardi Gras-themed evening, and there will be donation drawings.
“We have 15 showcase dessert vendors to date,” Ignacio Neumiller said. “The host, Aqua Kauai Beach Resort, is talking about chocolate, and the Kauai Sweet Shoppe will have caramel.”
Other showcase vendors include the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, Big Island Candies, Dizzy Lizzy, Haole Girl Island Sweets, Hukilau Lanai, Kauai Nut Roasters, Mailani’s Sweet Treats, Monkeypod Jam, VIP Treats and Sweets, Ono Pops, Wailua Shave Ice, Organo Gold Tea and Kauai Coffee.
