Walter W. Larsen Jr.

Feb. 6, 1939-Jan. 2, 2017

Walter William Larsen, Jr, age 77 of Lihue, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his ohana, on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017. He was born on Feb. 6, 1939, in Honolulu.

Walter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kaleinani “Nani” Larsen and his sons; Eric L. Larsen of Lihue and Greg Kekoa (Coleen) Larsen of Mililani, Oahu; his three grandsons, Nainoa, Makana and Kainalu Larsen of Mililani, Oahu; his brother, Ronald (Mary Pat) of Makakilo, Oahu; sister, Momi (Emil) Wolfgram of Kaneohe, Oahu; brother-in-law, Herb (Marie) Espinda of Minnesota; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Walter worked for the Social Security Administration for 41 years. He moved to Kauai in 1986 to manage the Kauai Office in Lihue, where he retired in 2004.

He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1957. He received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1961.

Walter developed an interest in sports that he enjoyed over his lifetime. It began as a member of the Roosevelt High School track and football teams. He went on to play football at the University of Hawaii under Coach Hank Vasconcellos. During his lifetime, Walter enjoyed participating in rugby, biking, swimming, aikido, jujitsu and canoe paddling. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed working out at the original Kauai Athletic Club at Kukui Grove.

Walter enjoyed being a civic participant in his community. He was an active supporter and volunteer for the American Lung Association. His interest in biking led him to participate in fundraising rides for the association. He was a frequent donor to the Blood Bank of Hawaii. He served as president of the Kauai Seniors Centers Inc. and was instrumental in providing support for activities and resources to assist Kauai’s senior programs.

Walter will be remembered for his calm and caring leadership, his loyalty and love for his ohana and friends. We shall miss his presence, but we know he is at peace with the Lord. Mahalo Ke Akua.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at the Lihue United Church, 4340 Nawiliwili road. Visitation begins at 9 a.m and services start at 10 a.m. Private inurnment.

Margarite ‘Margie’ Coller

Margarite “Margie” Helen Coller of Kapaa, Hawaii, passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 25, 2017, at the age of 64. Born on May 21, 1952, in Manila, Philippines, she was a retired material handler at Hawaiian Tel Com as well as a part-timer at Plantation Cinema, Al and Dons and Kukui Grove Cinema.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Kent N. Kaui; mother, Alicia Coller; and brother, Louis Coller.

Margie is survived by father, Richard W. Coller of Kapaa; her son, Kevin N.D. Kaui of Kapaa; daughters, Helene M.C. Kaui of Kapaa, and Lara Ann (Rory) N. Ho’omanawanui of Anahola; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, James Coller of Oahu, William (Roxanne) Coller of Wailua, Mark Coller of Oakland, California, and Patrick (Yukimi) Coller of Kapaa; sisters, Ann (Kevin) Arnold of Rochester, Minnesota, Katherine (Perry) Alisna of Kapaa, Susan (Dennis) Akutagawa of Kapaa, Claire (Robert Beck) Coller of Kapaa, and Ruth (Mark) Forbes of Hilo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit the family on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at the St. Catherine’s Church in Kapaa from 8 to 10 a.m. Eulogy will begin at 10 a.m. with mass to follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. The family invites everyone back to St. Catherine’s Church to the hall for a celebration of Margie’s life for a luncheon and fellowship at 3 p.m. after the burial.

Sondra Lee Field Grace

Sondra Lee Field Grace of Anahola, born on March 27, 1945, in California, passed away at her residence on Jan. 4, 2017, at the age of 71.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Pono Grace; brothers, John Field, and Harold Field; and sister, Edith Field.

Sondra is survived by her husband, Michael L. Grace; brother, Henry Field of California; sister-in-law, Marilyn Field of California; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family invites you to celebrate the life of a great woman on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, at their residence in Anahola (4693 Aliomanu Road) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Isabelo ‘Belong’ Domingo

Isabelo Domingo of Hanamaulu passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on Jan. 17, 2017, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Born on June 5, 1920, in Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he retired from the Lihue Sugar Plantation where he worked for 37 years as an irrigation laborer.

He is preceded in death by his father, Pablo Domingo; mother, Leocadia Domingo; and grandson, Joshua Ral Domingo.

Isabelo is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rositacion “Rose” Maneja Domingo; sons, Roger (Reni) Domingo of Anahola, Alex Domingo of San Diego, Edgar (Michelle) Domingo of Puhi; daughter, Evelyn (Seth) Proctor of Maui; nine grandchildren, Matthew (Linda Do) Domingo of Honolulu, Kourtni (Keoki) Rapozo of Kapa’a, Kanani Domingo and Maiele Domingo of San Diego, Mikayla Domingo, Makenna Domingo, and Torren Domingo of Puhi, and Amber Proctor and Caleb Proctor of Maui; one great-grandchild, Carly Rose Domingo of Honolulu; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit the family on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at the Immaculate Conception Church. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. with Mass to begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be followed at the Kauai Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Marcial Balbin Gray

Marcial Balbin Gray of Hanamaulu passed away at home on Jan. 18, 2017, at the age of 78. He was born in Candon, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, on June 27, 1938, and was a mill operator with Lihue Sugar Plantation.

Preceded in death by his parents, Melecio and Antera Gray; brother, Ernesto Gray Sr.; and sister, Hilda Lagmay.

Marcial is survived by his wife, Francisca Gray of Hanamaulu; daughter, Justina (Sam) Bombay of Las Vegas; three sons, George Gray, Reynald Gray of Hilo and Alfred Gray; three grandchildren, Geordan Gray, Justin Bombay and Aaryn Gray; brother, Jose (Virginia) Gray; sister-in-law, Loreta “Gloria” Gray; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Church with viewing from 8 a.m. and mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Maynette Rivera

Maynette Rivera of Kekaha, passed away at Kauai Veteran’s Memorial Hospital on Jan. 16, 2017, at the age of 62. Born on May 1, 1954, in Waimea, she was a teacher’s aide at Waimea High School.

She is preceded in death by Andres Fernandez, Patricia C. Fernandez and Casiano Fernandez.

Maynette is survived by her son, Kiv (Shanna) Rivera of Kekaha; daughter, Kira Rivera of Hanapepe; grandchildren, Kylie Rivera, Carlos Rivera-Carano, Kaiolu Rivera, and Mikaila Rivera; mother, Winona (Robert) Romero of Lihue; brother, Dwayne (Kim) Fernandez of Lawai and Kiley Fernandez of Puhi; sisters, Giesele (Charles E. Bohn III) Bohn of Lawai and Stacy (Steven) Vinzant of Eleele; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. with a celebration of her life beginning at 3 p.m.

Carlene L. Watson

Carlene Watson passed away on Jan. 3, 2017, in Oahu. She was born on May 27, 1957. She was a child care provider.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Ornellas, and her sister, Jodine Silva.

She is survived by one son, Kalani (Shari) Villon; daughters, Cherisse (Nathan) Villon, Ashley (Mark) Singleton; father, Joseph Ornellas Jr.; brothers, Joseph D. Ornellas, Quintin (Elma), Matthew (Liz) Ornellas and Milton (Debbie) Ornellas; sisters, Cozie Whitfield and Sheila (William) Richbow; six grandchildren; and numerous, aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at Mililani Mortuary (Mauka) on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 8:30 a.m. with burial to follow at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Nancy Burton

Nancy lost her two-year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Beloved wife of John Burton, loving mother of Mark Wilson, Terry (Gladys) Wilson, Deborah (Dan) Dunn, stepmother to John (Sarah) Burton Jr. and Beth Griffith.

Nancy had five grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Sadvery; and survived by her mother, Ann Sadvery; two sisters, Rosemarie and Frances; and one brother, John Daniel.

Her love and generosity touched us all. She will be missed by all.

Veronica Cadiz Cachola

Veronica Cadiz Cachola of Lihue passed away at home on Jan. 26, 2017, at the age of 79. She was born in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Jan. 16, 1938, and retired from Lihue Airport as a security guard.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Arcadio Cachola.

Veronica is survived by her husband, Rodrigo “Rudy” Racho; two sons, Nestor Cachola, Edward Cachola; two grandsons, Kaimalu Cachola and Kenji Cachola; brothers, Eulalio Cadiz, Melecio (Crecencia) Cadiz, Irineo (Berna) Cadiz; sisters, Alfreda V. (Nemecio) Cadiz, Trifonia C. Bolosan, Nena C. (Victor) Pescador, Carmen C. Cadiz; numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Lihue United Church with viewing from 8 a.m. and services celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Juan Sagucio

Juan Sagucio of Kaumakani passed away at Hale Kupuna on Feb. 1, 2017, at the age of 98. Born on Aug. 10, 1918, in Lanao Bangui in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he worked as a sugar cane carrier operator for Olokele Sugar Company.

He is preceded in death by Anicieto Sagucio, Gertrudes Sagucio, Ferdinan Sagucio, Liza Raposa, Carrie Sagucio, Leocio Sagucio, Catalino Sagucio, Nicomedes Sagucio, Mateo Sagucio, Melchor and Lucena Sagucio Fernandez.

Juan is survived by son, Oscar Sagucio of Kaumakani; daughter, Delphine Shea of Honolulu, Adeline (Greg) Enriques of Omao and Aurora (Edwin) Raposas of Kaumakani; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. with a celebration of life from 10 to 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at the Hanapepe Public Cemetery.

Alan Jordan Duarte

Alan Jordan Duarte passed away peacefully at home in Kalaheo on Feb. 1, 2017, after serving his time here on Earth. He was born on Sept 24, 1944, born in Eleele.

He was a retired grounds maintenance supervisor for Olu Pua Gardens as well as a tour driver for Hawaiian Discovery Tours. He had a passion for gardening and enjoyed fishing at Mahaulepu, hanging out with friends at Salt Pond, and cheering for his favorite football team, the San Francisco 49ers.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William J. Duarte and Beatrice Duarte; and brother, William Duarte Jr.

Alan is survived by his wife, Charmaine M. Duarte of 41 years; sons, Brandon Linoz of Kalaheo, Dorian Duarte of Kalaheo and Davin Duarte of Waimea; four grandchildren, Kaiyana, Keisha, and Kaleb Medeiros, all of Koloa, and Maia Linoz of Hanamaulu; sister, Mary Walsh of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Viewing for family and close friends will be on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai at 10 a.m. The family requests flowers be omitted as this is only a viewing.

A Celebration of Alan’s Life will be held on March 11, 2017 at Salt Pond Beach at 3 p.m.

Solina Asuncion Agudong

Solina Asuncion Agudong of Kealia passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 26, 2017, at the age of 88. She was born in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Oct. 17, 1928, and moved to Hawaii after World War II.

Solina was a strong, practical woman who never took modern day living features for granted. She achieved her goals to become self-employed and enjoyed an early retirement. Solina was widely known during the early 70s for her Ice Cream Candy Lunch Wagon and housing rentals.

Solina was preceded in death by her husband, Luciano Agudong. She is survived by six children, Monica (Clint) More, Linda Derit, Anita (Michael) Groves, Josephine Valdez, Kenneth (Karen) Agudong, Catherine (Kalani) Long; 15 grandchildren, Sarah, Kayli, Sydney, Siena, Joseph, Travis, Ciara, Christopher, Dustin, Andrew, Jason, Karl, Isaac, Melanie, Charles; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Demetrio Asuncion; and four sisters, Epifania Asuncion, Salva Galvez and Bernarda Deocares.

A private celebration of her life will be held for family members and relatives on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, 10 a.m., at her residence.

Sue Shizue Nakamatsu

Sue Shizue Nakamatsu of Kapaa passed away on Jan. 16, 2017, at the age of 93. She was born in Lihue on Feb. 5, 1923. Sue and her husband Yasu were the proprietors of Kuhio Fish Market in Kapaa.

Preceded in death by her son, Claron Nakamatsu; grandson, Liloa Nakamatsu; brothers, Minoru Sugita and Robert Sugita.

Sue is survived by her husband, Yasu Nakamatsu; daughter, Sheilah Miyake; son, Baron Nakamatsu; granddaughter, Michele Miyake; grandson, Kahai Nakamatsu; brother, Yoshiaki “Sharky” Sugita; daughter-in-law, Terri Nakamatsu; sisters-in-law, Patsy Sugita and Ellen Sugita; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private services were held.

Leonard S. Morris Sr.

Leonard S. Morris Sr. of Koloa, Hawaii, an Army veteran and retired police sergeant, was born on February 17, 1935, in Port Allen, Kauai, and passed away at his residence on February 1, 2016, at the age of 81.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ichiko Morris; parents, Frank S. Morris and Beatrice Souza; and brother, Herbert Morris.

Leonard is survived by his companion, Mary Sue Matter; sons, Leonard (Sharon) Morris Jr. of Hilo, Hawaii, and Patrick (Danielle) Morris of Omao, Kauai; daughters, Susan M. Memorial services will be held the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe on Friday, February 10, 2017. Visitation with the family will be at 9 a.m. with services to follow. Military honors will begin at 11 a.m.

Russell Takeo Ijima

Russell Takeo Ijima of Eleele, Kauai, and Hilo, Hawaii, passed away on Jan. 17, 2017, in Hilo at the age of 53. Born on July 31, 1963, in Waimea, Kauai, he was a bio-lab technician with the USDA-ARS in Hilo.

He is preceded in death by his father, Takeo Ijima; mother, Lillian Ijima; and brother, Gordon Ijima.

Russell is survived by his wife, Iris Ijima of Eleele; son, Brandon Ijima of Eleele/Reno Nevada; daughter, Robyn Ijima of Eleele/Washington; sister, Laurie (Mark) Furumasu of Washington; sister-in-law, Lorry (Scott Sato) Ijima-Sato of Kaneohe; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will be for noon to 2 p.m. with a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m.
