LIHUE — Last year, Aloha Angels held a North Shore talent show that featured three elementary schools. The show was so successful that the nonprofit decided to hold another show this year.
Except this time, Aloha Angels is getting every public elementary school on Kauai involved.
Ric Cox, president of Aloha Angels, said the organization will be dishing out cash prizes to students who outperform the competition.
“We’re going to give $1,300 in cash prizes. So it’s actual money for the kids,” Cox said. “We had a North Shore talent show last year as a pilot program and we had over 400 people that attended.”
This year’s competition shouldn’t be described as a talent show, however. Cox said that each public school already holds its own talent show, but every student who participates wins. Aloha Angels, on the other hand, wants to create friendly competition.
“Most of the schools have a talent show, not a contest. A lot of schools don’t believe in competition that way — they have a show and everybody wins,” Cox said. “But I believe in competition and what we’ll do is send out talent scouts to each school to watch the talent show and pick two acts from each of the 12 or 13 schools.”
For schools that don’t have talent shows, students will be able to audition for the scouts.
The theme of the contest this year is “We Love our Mothers!” to celebrate Mother’s Day, a concept that Cox hopes will soon turn into a local tradition on the Garden Isle.
Public students from second to fifth grade are eligible to participate in the contest.
