LIHUE — Sue Friar of New Mexico said viewing the Kauai Quilt Show was a different experience Monday at the Kauai Society of Artists Gallery at Kukui Grove Center.
“This is quite different from other quilt shows in the different styles and use of materials,” said Friar, a quilter since 1972. “But you do have the donation quilts.”
Sponsored by the Kauai Quilt Guild and Nene Quilters, the quilt show opened with a meet the quilters reception and will be open daily until Feb. 22 at the KSA gallery in Kukui Grove.
“We have more space to show this year,” said Cathy Counts, gallery-sitting for the Kauai Quilt Show. “I didn’t put in any quilts this year, but we definitely have more space and that allows us to open up more quilts instead of having them folded.”
More than 75 quilts from local quilters are on display, many for sale, including the donation quilts where 100 percent of the proceeds from the sales goes to a designated Kauai nonprofit of the buyer’s choice from a list of selected beneficiaries.
“There are a lot of good quilts,” said Karen Cox, another Kauai Quilt Guild member. “There’s Bigfoot and the Disneyland quilt where I really like the fireworks, and a lot of other good quilts to select from.”
Cox said with the many different types of quilts, viewers have a challenged selecting a viewers’ choice for the award which will be announced following the show.
“Jim (Friar, her husband) already knows which one he likes,” Friar said. “I’m still looking, although I tend to like the floral pieces.”
The show is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Friday night hours until 8 p.m.
