Kapaa High School’s varsity girls soccer team advanced to the finals of The Queen’s Medical Center Girls Soccer Championships — Division II state tournament.
The No. 2 seed Warrior wahine defeated No. 3 Pac-Five of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, 2-1, Friday in the Main Stadium of the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
“Pac-Five is a well-coached team,” said Kapaa varsity girls soccer Head Coach Mytra McKeague in a phone interview Friday. “Hats off to them. Our girls played hard today.”
The Warriors will face No. 1 seed Hawaii Prep of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation in the D2 state championship match at 5 p.m. today.
Hawaii Prep has won the last three Division II girls soccer state titles. For Kapaa, it is the school’s first appearance in the final match since 2009 — Kapaa lost to Pac-Five, 1-0, on penalty kicks.
The Kauai Interscholastic Federation has yet to win a girls soccer state championship.
“I think our girls are excited. They got a little bit of unfinished business,” McKeague said. “They set goals at the beginning of the season. They’re working towards them, and they’ve got one more to go. I’m hoping tomorrow they’ll reach that.”
Warriors junior forward Brianna Binder got the opening goal at the 33rd minute. Senior midfielder Kaisha Davis-Caberto followed with the team’s second goal at the 54th minute.
“I think the girls were hungry. They were hungry to get scores,” McKeague said. “Yesterday, those two didn’t score. So, it’s nice to have somebody else doing it.”
Pac-Five got on the board late as Wolfpack freshman midfielder Aislynn Crowder scored at the 77th minute.
