Jack Machorek continued his strong performance with Swim Aquatics Kauai at the 2017 Speedo Sectional swim meet in Federal Way, Wash., over the weekend.
Machorek was joined by Zachary Safford, another strong Kauai Interscholastic Federation swimmer, and Akira Williams as well as Swim Kauai Aquatics coach Curt Colby at the meet featuring 101 teams in the Western Region.
“This is a big meet in every way,” Colby said.
There are about 150 top competitors in each event, the fastest swimmers in the entire Western Region which covers teams from Alaska to Colorado.
“These three boys worked hard to get qualifying times to represent Kauai on the mainland,” Colby said.
Machorek led the way for SKA, making three finals in his top events. His greatest success came in the 500-yard freestyle where he finished 19th out of 104 swimmers in 4 minutes, 38.64 seconds.
He also finaled in the 200-yard individual medley on a time of 1:56.16 for 28th place out of 174 swimmers. Finishing at 1:42.74 in the 200-yard freestyle, Machorek finished 31st out of 171.
In the 100-yard freestyle, he touched at 47.79 to break 48 seconds for the first time-yard breaststroke where he broke the minute mark at 59.21 to finish 48th out of 156 swimmers. His 51.81 performance in the 100-yard butterfly netted 51st place, and in the 200 yard IM, Safford touched at 1:57.44 for 67th place. He also dropped times in the 100-yard freestyle (48.68) and the 200 yard butterfly (1:58.78).
Williams made his first showing in the Speedo Sectionals with two events, stopping the clocks at 48.08 in the 100-yard freestyle, just .04 off his personal best, but enough to claim 72nd place out of 152 swimmers. Williams was able to swim two additional “time trial” events, dropping times in the 100-yard butterfly (53.97), and the 50 yard freestyle (22.42).
“I am very impressed at how well these boys competed,” Colby said.
Swim Kauai Aquatics hosts a home meet this weekend at the YMCA Pool in Puhi with more than 100 swimmers expected with teams from Canada and Oahu.
