LIHUE — Kauai residents will soon be able to legally access a dirt trail in Koloa to get to the shoreline.
On Wednesday, the Kauai County Council unanimously approved a Grant of Pedestrian Access and Parking Easements, which was filed by CIRI Land Development in an effort to make sure public access is maintained.
The real estate company, which is building 10 single-family dwelling units fronting the beach in Weilweli, Koloa, near Pe‘e Road, wants to make sure people can continue to access the shoreline by establishing a 30-foot-wide easement by the property.
“This guarantees this spectacular point for whale watching, turtle watching and fishing will be accessible in perpetuity,” said Jan TenBruggencate, CIRI community relations representative for Kauai.
The company will also build a seven-car public parking lot. Construction is expected to be done by the summer.
“It was something the users of the trail, neighbors and fisherman asked for,” he said. “Neighbors were complaining that people were parking in their stalls and fisherman said they had to park far away and walk to the shoreline with all of their equipment.”
As part of the agreement, the county is not responsible for the upkeep of the trail or parking lot. That will be the responsibility of the people who buy the homes, said Jennifer Lim, attorney representing CIRI.
There will be a homeowners’ association, which will require its members to maintain the easement, she said.
