LIHUE — Tom Shigemoto, vice president of A&B Properties Kauai, was glad to present the A&B Foundation award to Kumu’s Cupboard at the outlet at Kukui Grove Center Friday.
The $2,000 award goes to supporting the free resource center for teachers in public, private and charter schools.
“I’m glad I got to come here,” Shigemoto said. “I’ve never been here to see what this is about. My wife was a teacher for 38 years and I know how much they spend on materials from their own pocket.”
Robyn Keawe of Kumu’s Cupboard said it is only through the support of community groups that allows Kumu’s Cupboard to continue to support teachers on Kauai.
“Since opening, we’ve had a lot of teachers who come through here,” Keawe said. “They are always excited about what they are able to get on a visit here. They even get to use shopping carts which were provided to Kumu’s Cupboard by Safeway Stores.”
Kumu’s Cupboard is a nonprofit that provides supplies donated by the community to teachers in public, private and charter schools.
It is open at Kukui Grove Center on Fridays from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m.
