From 3D structures to scenic paintings of the Garden Isle, there is something for everyone at the Kauai Society of Artists’ membership show.
“We have a really strong show this year, with contemporary and traditional art,” said Rose Anne Jones, KSA treasurer. “Side by side, it really makes a good and interesting show.”
KSA members interested in participating submitted one piece for the public’s viewing, she said.
“It’s an open show, which means there isn’t someone coming in to select the pieces,” Jones added.
The show boasts the talents of 42 artists.
““We don’t make any judgments on what they create. As long as you are over 18 and say you’re an artist, you can join.”
The show kicked off March 24 and runs through April 14. During that time, the public is invited to go to the KSA Gallery at the Kukui Grove Center and, for a $1 donation, vote for their favorites.
“We have very interesting 3D work — we have everything from a giant pig to a dragon and an outrigger canoe made out of ceramic,” Jones said.
The winners of the show will be announced on April 7 during a closing reception. First place comes with a $500 prize. Second place is $250 and third is $100, Jones said.
The reception at the KSA Gallery is open to the public.
The show has been a staple in the community for at least 30 years, Jones added.
“There are some people who remember being a part of the show since the 1970s,” she said.
While KSA became a nonprofit in 1983, it was an unofficial group for several years before that, Jones said.
The society, which has a membership of about 110, was formed to promote interest in the visual arts.
“Artists banded together to help each other, organize workshops and to just have a community art group,” Jones said.
KSA has sponsored workshops and lectures. It also organizes three art exhibits a year — Art Kauai, the Small Works Show and the membership show.
The public can view the artwork from noon to 6 p.m. daily and noon to 9 p.m. Fridays.
The closing reception is from 5 to 8 p.m.
