KEALIA — John Junkerman, director of “Okinawa: The Afterburn,” will be at Kealia Farm Market on Saturday, April 8 to answer questions and talk story after the free Kauai premier of the documentary.
The event is set for 7 to 10 p.m.
The award-winning film presents a history of Okinawa from World War II until present day and is narrated in English.
The film “conveys the complex postwar fate of Okinawa, an island that has had to live side-by-side with an extensive array of US bases,” according to a news release about the film.
An explanation of the recent resistance to a plan to build a U.S. base at Henoko and the controversy surrounding it will also be part of the presentation and is woven throughout the film.
This film depicts the 1945 April battle through the eyes of Japanese and American soldiers who fought each other on the same battlefields, along with Okinawa civilians who were swept up in the fighting,with carefully selected footage from the US National Archives, according to the release.
Kealia Farm Market is across from the north end of Kealia Beach in Kapaa and the film will be under the covered pavilion area.
