She returned to the Mokihana Aquatics Age Group with distance timed trials that ended Saturday at the Kauai High School pool.

“This one was a tough call,” said Mokihana coach Orlando “O” Anaya. “Maddie was perfect. Tyler improved on his three state times while trying to make his way to his first championship age group finals. It came down to these two, and I personally cannot see either swimmer not being Swimmer of the Meet. For only the second time in the 35-year history, Mokihana Aquatics has two Swimmer of the Meet.”
Maddie, 14, finished the meet with improvements in all four events she swam, ending with three HI-AA time standards and posting her biggest improvement in the 1,650 freestyle event where she touched the wall in 7 minutes, 18.60 seconds, an improvement of 37.24 seconds.
She earned Kauai Interscholastic Federation all-star honors for her participation in the Kapaa High School girls 200 yard medley relay team, the girls 200 yard freestyle relay team and individually, earned all-star recognition in the 100 yard backstroke.
Sister Katy Hoesel, 12, finished with improvements in three of her four events, her best swim coming in the 500 freestyle (7:40.37) where she chopped 36.73 seconds off her seeded time.
Tanaka, 12, finished by improving in five of his six swims, his best showing coming in the 1,000 freestyle (12:32.47) where he was 18.54 seconds better than his seeded swim. He finished with HI-AAA time standards in the 500 freestyle (6:12.66), the 200 individual edley (2:40.75), and the 400 IM (5:39.06).
Alfred Auger, 10, coming off a strong showing at the Sparky’s meet on the Big Island and a Swimmer of the Meet honor at the last Mokihana timed trials, finished with HI-AA time standard in three of his four events, his two best events — the 500 freestyle (7:40.28), and the 200 IM (3:13.89) — gaining the swimmer more than seven seconds in each event.
Leigh Idica, 11, finished with consistent HI-A swims in all her events, gaining 3.28 seconds in the 400 IM (6:15.67).
Rhett Leonard, 8, one of the new swimmers, finished with better times in two of his three swims, the best showing coming in the 200 IM (4:13.51) where he gained 12.08 seconds on his seeded swim.
