WAIMEA — A feral piglet lay on the side of Kaumualii Highway Sunday morning outside the forest in Omao — lifeless.
Further on, a clump of feathers fluttering from the wind generated by passing cars in Makaweli revealed the body of a chicken — lifeless.
In December, the state put up signs urging drivers to be careful after eight nene goslings were killed by vehicles.
“We easily see many animals’ dead bodies hit by cars on the highway,” said the Rev. Tomo Hojo of the West Kauai Hongwanji Mission.
The Waimea Buddhist ministers are planning an animal memorial service at the Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Hojo said the service will be hosted by the three Waimea Buddhist ministers — himself, the Rev. Noriaki Fujimori of the Waimea Higashi Hongwanji Mission, and the Rev. Kohtoku Hirao of the Waimea Shingon Mission.
The public is welcome.
“This is the first time we are having this kind of service,” Hojo said. “Let us think about animals’ life and passing by attending this service.”
