LIHUE — The island’s sole Toyota and Subaru dealership celebrated its grand opening Thursday by donating to a local nonprofit.
Servco Auto Kauai presented 200 backpacks, pens and a $2,500 donation to Kumu’s Cupboard, a local nonprofit that provides free school supplies to teachers and educational staff.
“We felt it was the best way to reach the community,” said Chris Yoo, vice president and general manager of Servco Auto Kauai. “It’s a big part of what Servco is, giving back to the community. It’s important for us on this special day to partner with and recognize someone we partnered with recently.”
The donation shows the community is behind us, said Elyse Litvack, co-founder of Kumu’s Cupboard.
“It’s money to buy supplies for our teachers, which benefits all our keiki,” she said. “The more the community is behind us, the more we can support our teachers.”
SAK opened its new dealership at 2477 Ulu Maika St, a 160,000-square-foot location three times larger than the previous spot. The added space makes room for seven new positions.
“The grand opening is a culmination of many years of hard work. It’s something we needed to better service the community. It’s a one-stop shop,” Yoo said.
The former location on Rice Street and one of the alignment properties on Aukele Street will be subleased, while the lease for the main service facility on Aukele Street was terminated as of Dec. 31.
Rick Ching, president and chief operating officer of Servco Pacific Inc, is proud of the team on Kauai.
“Chris is originally raised here on Kauai (and) came back to run our store,” he said. “We need a great team to serve the community.”
