Veronica Cadiz Cachola

Veronica Cadiz Cachola of Lihue passed away at home on Jan. 26 at the age of 79. She was born in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines on Jan. 16, 1938, and retired from Lihue Airport as a security guard.

She as preceded in death by her husband Arcadio Cachola.

She is survived by her husband Rodrigo “Rudy” Racho, sons Nestor Cachola and Edward Cachola, grandsons Kaimalu Cachola and Kenji Cachola, brothers Eulalio Cadiz, Melecio (Crecencia) Cadiz and Irineo (Berna) Cadiz, sisters Alfreda V. (Nemecio) Cadiz, Trifonia C. Bolosan, Nena C. (Victor) Pescador and Carmen C. Cadiz, and numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 11 at Lihue United Church, with viewing from 8 a.m. and services celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Russell Takeo Ijima

Russell Takeo Ijima of Eleele and Hilo, Hawaii, passed on Jan. 17 in Hilo, at the age of 53. Born on July 31, 1963 in Waimea, he was a bio-lab technician with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service in Hilo.

He was preceded in death by his father Takeo Ijima, mother Lillian Ijima and brother Gordon Ijima.

He is survived by his wife Iris Ijima of Eleele, son Brandon Ijima of Eleele and Reno, Nevada, daughter Robyn Ijima of Eleele and Washington, sister Laurie (Mark) Furumasu of Washington, sister-in-law Lorry (Scott Sato) Ijima-Sato of Kaneohe, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, March 19 at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. with a celebration of life at 2 p.m.

The family suggests casual attire.

Elena Elaine Seals

Elena Elaine Seals of Lihue passed away on Kauai at the age of 68 on Feb. 20. She was born on Oahu on Feb. 21, 1948 and was a pastor.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Cheryl Moana Marie Medina.

She is survived by her sons John C. (Linda) Davis, Julian P. (Kehau) Davis, Philip J. (Angie) Davis and Larry J. Davis, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brother Art Pavao and sister Bernie Vierra.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, March 11, at the Aloha Church in Lihue from 9 to 10 a.m. Services will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a burial at the Lihue Public Cemetery.

The family suggests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Pacita Balaan Ramento

Pacita Balaan Ramento, formerly of Hanamaulu, passed away on Feb. 4, 2017 peacefully at home in the Philippines at the age of 95. She was born on Jan. 1, 1922 in Cadcadir, Claveria, Cagayan, Philippines, she was a seed planter retired from Lihue Plantation.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Cirilo Sagucio Ramento, sons Illustre and Ludivico Ramento, parents Cornelio and Ciriaca Balaan, brother Juan Balaan, sister-in-law Florentina Balaan, sister Crispina B. Martinez and brother-in-law Julian Martinez.

She is survived by son Romy (Criselda) Ramento of Hanamaulu, daughter Connie (Inocencio “Joe”) Alcaraz of Puhi, grandchildren Imelda (Morace) Romero of Philippines, Ferdinand Ramento of Oahu, Marvin (Erleeh) Ramento and Michael (Jenny) Ramento of Oregon, Joseph (Jackie Lou) Alcaraz, Janelyn (Hermoso Jr.) Parallag and Cheryl (Mykel) Parallag, all of Puhi, great-grandchildren Johanna and Princess Romero of the Philippines, Kristal Mae and Nadine Tabernero of Maui, Sharmayne Joy and Xian Angelo Alcaraz, Janessa Haydee and Hayven Gabe Parallag and Chretzen Mikael Parallag, all of Kauai, and Poseidon, Orion Koa and Oceana Ramento of Oregon, sister Constancia (Alfredo) Acob and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held in the Philippines.

Katherine Elaine Duarte Summers

Katherine Elaine Duarte Summers, formerly of Kapaa, passed away with the aloha pumehana of her ohana by her side on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the age of 84. Born on Sept. 29, 1932, she was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents Odelia Duarte and Jacintho Duarte Sr., brothers, Edwin “Dosha” Duarte and Ernest Duarte, sister Eleanor Almeida, and sons Russell Marshall Jr. and Vernon “Kutchie” Marshall.

She is survived by her loving husband, William Summers, son Michael (Melanie) Marshall, daughters Katherine (Daniel) Kamai, Travan Kelekoma, Corinna Allenson, Kirstie (Martin Sr.) Banda and Harlynn (Richard) Rodriguez.

Surviving also are brothers Jacintho Jr. “Juni” (Carol) Duarte and Raymond (Stella) Duarte, and sister Gladys Oshita.

Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, more than 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A celebration of life with be held in Orange, California.

Mulen Keaka Bernadette Kaukani-Ka‘ahanui

Mulen Keaka Bernadette Kaukani-Ka‘ahanui of Kapaa passed away on Feb. 26 at the age of 58. She was born in Honolulu on Feb. 23, 1959, and was an adult supervisor for Kawaikini New Century Public Charter School.

She is survived by her husband, Mathew K. Ka‘ahanui, daughters Jaclyn Kuuleimomionalani Ka‘ahanui and Jaylyn Kawai Opua-ululani Ka‘ahanui, hanai-son Kahua Kanaka‘ole, daughter-in-law Cyndel Shigematsu, grandson Kaikoa Kanaka‘ole, brother Joseph Kaukani and numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 1, at Lydgate Beach Park, in the pavilion next to the big pavilion from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with potluck lunch to follow. Monetary gifts would be deeply appreciated by the family.

Lynette Puaoleana Kuhaulua Lanning

Lynette Puaoleana Kuhaulua Lanning, 72, of Anahola, passed away on Feb. 28 at Wilcox Medical Center.

Born on Jan. 23, 1945 in Lihue, she was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Mary Kuhaulua, brothers Robert, Benjamin, Johnny and Mathan Kuhaulua, sister Emma Kuhaulua and grandchild Jostin Tin.

She is survived by her husband Earl “Moku” Lanning Sr., sons Earl (Jolene) Lanning Sr., Pono (Tammy) Lanning, Archie Lanning and Moku Lanning, daughters Earlyn (Kimo) Tin, Earlet (Kimo) Lanning and Earline Lanning, brothers Kaleihoku (Sarah) Kuhaulua and Abraham Kuhaulua, 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 3852 Makaio Rd. in Anahola from 1 p.m., and services will follow at 1:30 p.m.

Lei and flowers will be appreciated by the family, which suggests aloha or casual attire. A paina will follow.

Audrey Ball Nokes

Audrey Ball Nokes, 78, of Lihue, lost her battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Sunday, March 5, while surrounded by her sons in Sherwood, Oregon.

She was born April 9, 1938 in San Mateo, California, and was raised in nearby San Carlos. She attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, and married R. Gregory Nokes, a marriage that later ended in divorce. They had two children, Deston and Jeffrey Nokes. She relished the life of a world traveler, living in Puerto Rico, Argentina, Boston and New York. In 1992, she moved to Kauai on a whim, arriving one month before Hurricane Iniki hit the island. There, she thrived for more than 20 years, managing a bed-and-breakfast and selling her handcrafted “Angels of Aloha” souvenirs. Known on Kauai as “the angel lady,” she loved quilting, crafting, bawdy humor, British films and traveling. She was generous to a fault, and took an optimistic approach to life.

In addition to her sons, Audrey is survived by her grandchildren, Deanna and Jacob Nokes, brother Dee Ball and daughter-in-law Arlene Nokes.

Pearl L. Camara

Pearl L. Camara of Kalaheo passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on March 1, at the age of 95. Born on Aug. 23, 1921 in Hanapepe, she was retired from Dairy Queen.

She was preceded in death by her husband Manuel Camara, Sr.

She is survived by her sons Walter (Phyllis) Camara of Kalaheo, John (Phyllis) Camara of Honolulu and Manuel Camara Jr. of Lawai, daughter Audrey Akita of Kalaheo, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, March 18, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. with services beginning at 10 a.m. Burial at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe will follow later in the afternoon.

The family suggests casual attire.

Tsuruo ‘Jackie’ Urata

Tsuruo “Jackie” Urata passed away at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Feb. 24 at the age of 86. Born in Wahiawa, Kauai on Aug. 10, 1930, he was an irrigation supervisor for McBryde Sugar Company.

He is preceded in death by his parents Tadashi and Yoshiko Urata.

She is survived by his wife Yasuko Urata of Eleele, son Myles Urata of Oahu, daughter Cynthia (Eric) Okino of Oahu, grandchildren Chelsey Okino, Kyle Okino, Chris Urata and Jennifer Urata, sister Sueko Higa of California and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, March 16, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by services at 11 a.m.

The family suggests aloha attire and welcomes flowers.

Shizuko Y. Emoto

Shizuko Y. Emoto passed away peacefully on Feb. 17 at the age of 93. Born in Waimea on Jan. 1, 1924, she was a retired dental assistant.

She was preceded in death by parents Shuzo and Kikuno Watanabe Yamaoka, sister Dorothy Yamaguchi and brother Masakazu Yamaoka.

She is survived by husband Masanori Emoto, son Jeffrey (Gail) Emoto, daughter Donna (James) Fuji, grandchildren Ashley (Kevin) Newton, Joel Fuji, Jacie Emoto, Lyndi (Damon Chong) Emoto-Chong and Thad (Desiree) Fuji, great-grandchildren Hope Newton, Lucy Newton, Noah Chong, Willow Chong, Keola Agader-Ching, Tayah Fuji and Tavena Fuji.

Private services were held.
