KAPAA — The wahine Warriors powered nine runs on four hits in the fifth inning Wednesday to take a come-from-behind 17-7 win over the Waimea Menehune at the Kapaa High School field.
Trailing 7-5 going into the home half of the inning, Kapaa’s Jazlyn Kaleiohi whacked into a triple and stretched it into a grand slam in-the-park off a Menehune miscue.
Kapaa’s nine runs across on four hits included included Kaleiohi’s triple, an RBI double from Leipua Kaui, and a pair of singles.
The Warriors closed the game with three additional runs in the sixth inning on a bunt single from Tia Takasaki to end the contest on the 10-run ruling.
Kapaa finished with 17 runs on eight hits, led by Kaleiohi scoring twice and marking four RBI on her fifth inning triple. Kaui scored three times and marked an RB I on her double. Tyra Alao scored once and pushed two runs home on her pair of singles. Kendra Kupihea scored once, sacrificed to mark an RBI in the fifth. Selena Morita marked an RBI along with Sabrina Telles-Kelekoma.
Kailee Rivera walked one and gave up three hits, including a triple by Waimea’s Cheyla Goias-Soares in the second inning before Tia Takasaki took over in relief and carried the win.
“Some days are like that,” said Kapaa coach Francis Takasaki. “Kailee had a rough outing today, but we were not concerned about the outcome. It’s the process that we focus on.”
Waimea opened with a run on two hits in the opening, only to have Kapaa go ahead on a pair of runs on one hit in the home half of the first inning.
Waimea pushed ahead on four runs on four hits in the second inning, including triples from Cheyla Goias-Soares and Deirdrelynn Tafiti. Kapaa could only answer with a run to end the first two frames 5-3 in favor of the Menehune.
Waimea continued to lead through the fourth inning before Kapaa pushed its comeback nine runs, interrupted by a official discussion on player legality.
Goias-Soares suffered the loss.
Goias-Soares topped the Waimea hitting, scoring three times and conked the triple with a pair of RBI. Deirdrelynn Tafifi scored twice, had a single, double, and triple with an RBI. Starlynn Ripley scored once and marked two RBI on a pair of singles, and Makeyah Wisneski marked an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
With the win, Kapaa enjoys a week off while Waimea hosts Kauai High School on Saturday at the Waimea Canyon Park starting at 9 a.m.
