LIHUE — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will be hosting educational events on Kauai twice a month throughout this summer, beginning in April.
The talk story outreach events will be at different places around the island on two Saturdays each month through July and the events will offer crafts and educational booths, and activities that teach attendees about the island’s natural and cultural resources, cultural protocol and regulation.
“We are finding that people want to learn about our island and how to care for it properly,” said Victoria Wichman, archaeologist for the Division of State Parks Kauai interpretive program. “From gaining educational awareness, many people then volunteer to protect our natural and cultural resources, thereby contributing to our community’s sense of place.”
Staff will be represented from DLNR’s aquatics, boating, forestry and wildlife, state parks, conservation enforcement divisions, and natural area reserves and Na Ala Hele Trails and Access programs. Kauai County Department of Parks and Recreation will also be involved.
Events will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on:
April 8 — Salt Pond County Beach Park
April 22 —Poipu Beach Park
May 6 — Lydgate Beach Park and Wailua River State Park (Hikina a ka la area)
May 20 — Black Pot Park, Hanalei
June 3 — Haena Beach Park
July 1 — Polihale State Park
