LIHUE — The Diabetes Self-Management Program for Kauai kupuna begins next week.
Developed by Stanford University, the program is designed to provide support and build confidence in the participants’ ability to manage their diabetes while maintaining active and fulfilling lives.
The popular six-week series starts April 27, and will be held from 2 p.m. to 4:30 at the Koloa Neighborhood Center. Pre-registration is required. The class size is limited to 16 participants and their caregivers.
“I encourage our kupuna to sign up for the workshop series to learn about ways to improve their health. Past participants have told us that they’ve gained a lot from the experience,” said Kealoha Takahashi, county executive on aging.
The cost of the workshop is $12 for seniors 60 years and older and their caregivers. It includes a book, “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,” and a CD. If space is available, younger people will be able to attend the workshop for $40 fee.
Participants make weekly action plans, share experiences and help each other solve challenges they encounter with skills and techniques learned in the workshop.
