LIHUE — The Boys and Girls Club on Kauai wanted to make a difference for teenagers by showing their “True Colors” on Sunday.
More than 100 teenagers and supporters came out to raise awareness of the dangers of depression and suicidal thoughts at Vidinha Park.
The color run was brainstormed, generated and operated by the kids involved in Boys and Girls Club.
“Kids listen to kids better than kids listen to adults,” said Boys and Girls Club board member Jill Lowry.
“Most, if not all of them, have dealt with suicide,” she added. “They all felt very passionately about it and wanted to do some kind of event that would reach out to other people their age.”
According to state statistics through 2015, one person attempts suicide every two days in Hawaii.
The event not only helped teenagers realize the consequences of depression and bullying, but allowed for team building and leadership training.
Part of the leadership program is fostering kids to become the new generation of leaders, Lowry said.
“We really want to empower them to create moments in the community,” she said.
