KAPAA — Kevin Mize of California said watching the mural take shape is like watching a movie.
Mize, who coordinated the meeting of artist MEAR ONE with Erik Pendleton, owner of Hoku Foods, watched MEAR ONE grapple with the heat of the afternoon sun Monday, the dust from passing cars, and the brisk tradewinds.
“People passing by stop and look at what is going on,” Mize said. “Sometimes, you get artists who stop and then, it’s really fun.”
Pendleton said the artwork, which started Saturday, will be a gift to the community from Hoku Foods, and he is excited about the reception people are giving the piece.
“We love it,” he said. “Everyone says it’s a really nice piece and how it’s an improvement to the building.”
MEAR stands for Manifest Energy And Radiate, said Mize.
“He grew up in a real tough part of town — the hood,” Mize said. “Now, he’s very well-known in California.”
Pendleton said the project is expected to take several more days to finish.
