NAWILIWILI — The Kauai High School girls tennis teams preserved their undefeated record, 5-0, and the Voyager boys got past the Red Raider boys, 3-2, during the latest round of Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis contested Saturday at the Hokuala tennis courts.
When the boys played, fans sought refuge from the heat by taking to a stand of trees lining the courts, and the Raiders took victories in the boys second and third doubles.
Red Raiders Cayson Lalin and Nick Badua teamed to take a 6-4, 6-4 win over Island School’s Noah Howard and Dominic Lafratta in boys second doubles, and Kauai’s duo of Sage Cierras and Cameron Navor were 7-6 (2), 7-5 winners over the Voyagers’ pair of Andy Anderton and Patrick Mckenna.
Island School boys took victories in boys singles, and a hotly contested boys first doubles match when Manix Wolan teamed with Kahea Kamalani to take down Trevor Carbonel and Chris Constantino in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
In boys first singles, Island School’s David Janshen, an exchange student from Germany, defeated Akira Takabayashi, 6-1, 6-0. Island School’s Sasha Rovinsky added several drop shots to his arsenal and improved his game to beat Koa Cierras, 6-0, 6-0.
Kauai’s Anna Burkman took Island School’s Ajia Sclafani, 6-1, 6-1, in girls first singles, and Tia Fulks was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Risa Whetsel in girls second singles. On the doubles courts, Hoku Iseri teamed with Kaylin Kukino for a tough, 7-5, 6-2 win over Island School’s Lily Flynn and Gabri Lafratta in a match that was suspended by a medical timeout as one of the Red Raiders recovered from the heat.
Mana Graziano teamed with Miya Reese to defeat the Island School duo of Julia Flagg and Lapis Dove, 6-2, 6-3, in girls second doubles. Rina Takabayashi was paired with Helena Huffman in girls third doubles to defeat the Island School pair of Allison Summerhays and Hannah Whelan, 6-4, 6-2.
During exhibition matches, Whetsel redeemed her earlier loss by teaming with Emma Thain to get past the Kauai duo of Mari Kanna and Sandy Haz, 8-6.
Island School also took the final exhibition match when Kaikea Daui teamed with Dillon Fulks to get past the Red Raider pair of Dhemie Dalayap and Thaine Ochoco, 7-5.
Over at Hanalei Bay Resort, Kapaa split its series with Waimea, the Kapaa girls taking a 3-2 edge over the Menehune, and the Waimea boys getting past the Warriors, 3-2.
Kapaa’s Shannon Sitzler defeated Waimea’s Micah Guillermo, 6-1, 6-3, in girls first singles, and in girls second singles Kapaa’s Mary Jane Uribe, playing in her first singles match, won by default.
The Kapaa girls took the edge in girls first doubles when the team of Sydney Nice and Malia Searby took a 6-2, 7-5 win over Waimea’s Ashley Pascual and Khryshia Pascual.
Waimea picked up its win in girls second doubles when the Waimea duo of Kristine Ruiz and Leslie Uri took three sets to get past the team of Leila Nelson and Hannah Collins-Diojode, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The Waimea pair of Shania Miner and D’Annalyn Helgen was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over the Kapaa pair of Annalani Bacon and Ruby Jane Udaundo, who was playing her very first match.
On the boys’ side, Kapaa took the singles matches before relinquishing to Waimea in doubles.
Warrior Jake De Peralta was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Waimea’s Edmelle Medina in boys first singles, and Kyler Tom took three sets to get past Waimea’s Mark Damo, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in boys second singles.
Waimea’s Joshua Subiate and Limar Medina defeated Kapaa’s Mason Buick and Levi Eulalio, 6-1, 6-1, in boys first doubles.
Fierce action took place in boys second doubles when the Waimea pair of Wendell Batangan and Ky Parongao took three sets to get past Kapaa’s Cody Andrews and Michael Anderson, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.
“This was the match of the day,” said Kapaa coach Russell Krummell. “It was very entertaining. Both Cody and Michael played like savages, thus earning them their nicknames ‘The Savages,’ but they could not defeat the monster plays of Wendell and Ky.”
Waimea wrapped up the day with a win in boys third doubles when Bryan Ingeniero teamed with Fred Adella to take a 6-0, 6-4 win over Kapaa’s Glen Aguada and Omar Elwin.
Kauai next hosts Waimea Saturday at the Hokuala tennis courts, starting at 9 a.m., an earlier start time because of Kauai High School’s prom. Island School will host Kapaa in the final match of the KIF tennis season at the Kauai Community College tennis courts, starting at 1 p.m.
The state qualifying matches will take place at the Hokuala and KCC courts starting on April 20.
