HANALEI — When Kalo went missing Wednesday, Alan and Susie Faye were crushed.
Two days later, with no sight of the beloved chocolate labrador, they are disappointed but continue to hope for his return.
“It’s like losing a son,” Alan Faye said.
The 8-year-old dog has been a member of their family since it was a puppy. Kalo and Keith Cabe, Alan and Susie’s son, were best friends and often together, either in the yard when Keith was working or on the road in his truck.
“This dog is more like a person,” Alan said. “You say anything to him and he responds immediately.”
Kalo, described as friendly and a lover of chasing tennis balls, would bark perhaps once or twice at strangers. That was about it. He disappeared from their North Shore yard a few blocks from Hanalei Bay Resort. He sometimes visits a lady-friend dog two blocks from home, but otherwise, in all the years they’ve had him, never wandered away.
Alan believes he may have been stolen.
“It’s a very strange thing,” he said. “It’s looking much like it’s a dog-napping.”
Keith has a special whistle he uses to call Kalo, and the dog always responds.
“If Kalo is within hearing distance, he comes running,” Alan Faye said.
He’s spreading the word about Kalo’s disappearance via TGI, radio and social media, checking in with the Kauai Humane Society, and is offering a $100 reward. There has been no word.
“It’s devastating,” Alan said.
The Fayes are continuing their search, and want Kalo back.
Kalo was last seen wearing a red collar with a tag. Anyone who sees him is asked to call Keith, 635-4341 or Susie, 826-9791.
