LIHUE — Sean Magoun, an air riflery coach for the Island School team, announced a 2017 coach-certification course for rifle and air rifle.
The coach course is being co-hosted by Island School and the Hawaii Friends of National Rifle Association, with the credential earned for those successfully completing the course being Air Rifle and Smallbore Rifle Appointed Coach — Level 1, a three-year certification.
This course is the basic standard of certification in the combined National Rifle Association, USA Shooting, JROTC and Civilian Marksmanship Program sanctioned coach credential program, Magoun said.
Paul Davis, a nationally recognized instructor of the National Coach Development Program, will be leading the course, which is a nonprofit activity for the purpose of raising the level of training, expertise safety, and certification of Kauai’s high school air rifle teams and community shooting programs and coaches.
The course is also appropriate for JROTC instructors, Boy Scout rifle shooting merit badge counselors, rodeo, and 4-H Air Rifle Program leaders.
Two class sessions will be offered. the first is Monday, July 24 through Thursday, July 27, from 5:45 to 9:45 p.m. at the Wilcox Gymnasium at Island School. The second is Thursday, July 27 and Friday, July 28, from 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
Coaches completing the academic training successfully will gain hands-on coaching experience under the supervision of Davis by serving as assistant coaches during the Intermediate Junior Shooting Camp, Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30, at the Island School air rifle range and Wilcox Gymnasium.
The clinic is open to all 18 years and older, and no coaching experience is required. There is a course fee which includes instruction materials, binder, test and credential fees, and meals.
Junior shooters between 16 and 17 years old may also complete the course to earn the Junior Coach Trainer credential. Junior Trainer applicants must attach two letters of recommendation from a coach, teacher or parent with their application.
