HANAMAULU — Kanani Fu, county housing agency director, is happy about Ho‘oluana at Kohea Loa because it offers an option for youth in the future.
“This is not for me,” Fu said. “It’s for my children, and what they will have when they are ready.”
Fu was among a large crowd that celebrated the blessing of the Hanamaulu housing project which will eventually have more than 150 homes — single-family and duplexes — including 32 affordable housing units by D. R. Horton.
Applications for the first eight units were being accepted from last Saturday, said Bob Bruhl, head of Hawaii operations for D.R. Horton. A lottery for the first eight homes will be held Saturday.
“This is pretty much it,” said Clyde Kodani of Kodani & Associates who did the drafting for groundwork for the project. “The groundbreaking was done before work started. This is the blessing, so once the first buyers are determined, work on the homes can start.”
BJ Nagata, sales manager for Ho‘oluana at Kohea Loa, said there are six different plans beginning with a three-bedroom/two-bath plan. These are situated on lots averaging 6,000 square feet with prices starting from $499,000. There are options for four-bedroom and five-bedroom/three-bath dwellings.
More detailed house plans as well as applications and home features are available at the sales center at the entrance to the project on Kuhio Highway just before the Kapule Highway stoplight.
Eddie Sarita, president of the Hanamaulu Community Association. is excited about the neighborhood center which will be part of the new community adjoining the King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School.
“This is going to be right along the highway next to the school,” Sarita said. “Now, we have to greet all of these new residents and invite them to become part of the Hanamaulu association.”
Fu said the blessing of Ho‘oluana at Kohea Loa was only part of a great day for housing.
“Earlier, we got word that the first permits for the Ele‘ele project was approved,” she said. “This is a huge step for us.”
