LIHUE — Kapaa Junior Warriors’ Pohaku Contrades-Efhan peeled off two touchdowns and added a two-point conversion to lead the Junior Warriors’ to a 26-6 win over the Lihue Junior Raiders Saturday night under chilly winds at Vidinha Stadium.
With the win, the Junior Warriors, under head coach Eddie Keoho, claimed the Division 2 title for the Kauai Youth Football spring football spring season.
Both teams grappled through a defensive, scoreless first half, the Junior Red Raiders threatening in the final minute.
The pack struggled for control of the still-live ball before Oana corralled the ball under Kapaa’s double-team defense. Unfortunately, the play could not convert a first down for Lihue, and Kapaa took over to end the stalemated first half.
Kapaa roared after the break to open the second half on a touchdown which came on a Contrades-Efhan 53-yard scoot to the right side. The point-after failed, putting the Junior Warriors on the board with a 6-0 count.
Lihue answered the score on its ensuing possession when Jahzi Dotimas Batangan found the end zone at the end of a three-yard charge in heavy traffic. The PAT failed, deadlocking the contest, 6-6, with 7:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Contrades-Efhan heralded Kapaa’s presence on the ensuing series, moving the ball to the Lihue 9-yard line before Eli Keoho tapped paydirt on a charge up the middle for the 12-6 lead.
Kapono Na-o brought the quarter to a close, connecting with Kaimana Lopez-Valvieja on a 30-yard scoring pass which was capped by Contrades-Efhan running in the PAT for the 20-6 lead with just 29 ticks showing in the quarter.
Kapaa’s Jojo Banasihan went 3 yards up the middle in heavy traffic for the final TD.
