KAPAA — The boxes containing flowering orchid plants are all going to new homes, said Fely Sams at Orchid Alley in Kapaa on Monday.
“These are all Neill’s children,” Fely said. “He grew them and developed them. Now, they’re all going to new homes.”
Monday was the first day of shipping for Mother’s Day; shipping will continue through Wednesday before attention shifts to the local market for the Kapaa orchid shop.
“We’re busy,” Fely said. “I’ve been so busy trying to get everything ready before the delivery man comes to pick up the shipments; I haven’t even checked the computers, yet. I keep hearing the alarm for email go off, but we’re just smashed.”
Neill Sams had previously said Mother’s Day is the busiest time of the year for them.
“We do a lot of shipping,” Neill said. “Then, once that is done, we turn our attention to the local market. Mother’s Day is definitely busier than Valentine’s Day or even Christmas.”
Fely said one of the contributing factors to Mother’s Day being a heavy shipping date is because the weather is more temperate than the other holidays, resulting in a high rate of success in shipping live plants.
“Every piece is hand-wrapped to ensure safe delivery,” Fely said. “There is no way of getting around this attention to care.”
