PUHI — Bombs from the Japanese planes were falling onto Pearl Harbor, and a young Red Cross volunteer was called into service.
The young volunteer grabbed two pieces of bread and pedaled his bike one mile to the Red Cross first aid station at Lunalilo School on Oahu, where he used his first aid training to help with civilian casualties from the Japanese bombing.
Working nonstop, Daniel Inouye, who later became senator, did not come home for five days.
The saga of Inouye illustrates “The War Hero” level of sponsorship for the American Red Cross Centennial Gala which will celebrate “The 100 Years of Aloha” on Sept. 16 at the Sheraton Waikiki on Oahu.
Marissa Sandblom, a Grove Farm Company vice president, said Grove Farm took advantage of The War Hero level of sponsorship to get a table at the upcoming gala to enable Kauai’s Volunteer of the Year, and Padraic Gallagher, the Red Cross Kauai executive director, to be able to attend the gala.
The 100 Years of Aloha will honor the countless individuals and local organizations that have been part of the Red Cross humanitarian history. The event will also further the lifesaving Red Cross mission to help people in their darkest hours of need.
