LIHUE — The strains of Yuyake Koyake, a traditional Japanese folk song, filled the Kauai Adult Day Health Center in Lihue Monday morning.
“This is her favorite song,” said Pacita McDermott of the Kauai Adult Day Health Center. “Yuriko Miyakado is 100 years old today. I even helped make her head lei to celebrate.”
Miyakado, formerly a Nagata girl, lives in Kalaheo, near the end of Papalina Road. Her birthday was celebrated by clients of the Lihue day health center as well as a neighbor, Tomiko Kabazawa, who presented the birthday girl with a lei.
Born and raised in Kalaheo where her family were pineapple farmers, Miyakado worked for the Wilcox Hospital in the housekeeping department before retiring in 1962.
