LIHUE — Wayne and Shirley Medeiros of Kekaha were in the audience Sunday at the Kauai High School gym.
“My nephew, Jacob Simbre, plays for the Whitmore Posse, so we had to come see at least one game,” said Shirley.
The game involved the Posse playing Team Flex for the finals of the seventh-grade boys division. This game also opened the string of finals which were scheduled to contest primarily at the Wilcox Gymnasium at Island School.
Landyn Jumawan finished with 13 points and EJ Kapihe added a dozen points to lead the Posse to a 53-28 win to claim the seventh-grade boys title.
Jumawan and Kapihe each notched six points in the first half, and Makana Yamato added five points, including one from outside the three-point arc, to lead the Posse to an early, 30-6 first-half lead.
Kobe Santos fired off five points, including a three-ball in the second half, as the Posse slowed its scoring but still stayed ahead 23-20 to Team Flex.
Kahil Wilson and Kai Riddick each notched five points — all in the second half — to lead the Team Flex scoring which included a pair of treys, one from Riddick in the second half.
The finals marked the end of the Kauai Hoops Classic, which started Thursday with more than 100 games scheduled over four venues — Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, Island School, Kauai High and Kapaa High.
