KALAHEO — Kaulupono basketball had all three of its summer youth basketball league teams on the floor Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
“It was good the eighth grade girls got to play in the Kauai Hoops Classic,” said Pedro Saligumba, coach of the Kaulupono 5G team. “Playing in the tournament really opened their eyes, especially when they met the Upcountry Elite team. Look at them. They’re playing with a difference tonight. They really learned what it’s like playing at a different level.”
Kaulupono finished the night with two wins — a 15-7 victory over the A‘o uka Rebels 5G team, and a 57-16 win over the Dream Team 8G.
The final outing saw the Dream Team 6G redeem its earlier loss with a 26-15 win over the Kaulupono 6G squad.
Olivia Malafu and Kiani Pia Salvador set the pace for the Dream Team 8G on 10 and eight points respectively.
Liana Hasegawa, playing on both the Kaulupono 5G and 6G teams, topped the Kaulupono 6G effort with nine points.
Earlier in the evening, Hasegawa was joined by guard Katelyn Constantino in scoring five points apiece to lead the 15-7 win over the A‘o uka Rebels 5G. Constantino, working the ball through the hardwoods, popped a second-half trey in the win where Skylyn Fagarang set the pace for the Rebels on four points.
Balanced scoring by the Kaulupono 8G team highlighted the division match where Braelyn Cayaban netted 11 points. Kaye Serapio and Kierstin Gummerus each poured in 10 points to lead the 57-16 win.
Alexie Ann Yam topped the Dream Team scoring on nine points. Bryshell Kalai added three points. Kiani Pia Salvador and Carah Korte Llego each finished with pairs.
The summer youth basketball league will be on break until July 6 when it resumes with a full slate of games.
