The low posting by Olivia Malafu for the Dream Team 5G combined with the speed of guard Lele Gonsalves to drive the Dream Team to a 26-23 edge over the Kauai Lynx 5G team on Tuesday night during the summer youth basketball league games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Malafu topped all scorers with 13 points with Gonsalves contributing seven points in the win. Jazmin Constantino and Joleina Cumlat led the Lynx effort with eight and seven points respectively.
The Lynx redeemed its opening loss by rebounding to a 34-20 win over the A‘o Uka Rebels in the eighth grade division, the second match of the night.
Jasmine Ballesteros and Amalya Sales topped the Lynx victory with 11 and 10 points respectively, while Jaley Medeiros finished with high-point honors for the Rebels on seven points.
Kierstin Gummerus scored 14 points and Kaye Serapio added 11 points to lead the Kaulupono 8G squad to a 40-25 win over the Kauai Ballers in the final game. Tory Refamonte led the Ballers’ effort on 10 points, and Tasia Kamoku had nine points.
The summer youth basketball league takes a break until next week because several of the league teams are involved with the Kauai Hoops Classic coordinated by Coach Clarence Sales and the Kauai Lynx program.
Tournament play starts from 1 p.m. at four different basketball sites Thursday and continues through Sunday.
