LIHUE — If we don’t do this, there will be children who will go back to school without supplies, said Sharon Lasker, chair for the Backpack Brigade 2017.
“We just want to give equal footing to children at the start of the school year,” Lasker said. “These are for children on Kauai who are the most in need, vetted by Child and Family Service. Many of us remember going off to school with our brand new backpack filled with school supplies, secure in our dreams for the new school year. The Backpack Brigade aims to give this feeling to our children in need.”
Lasker said the goal is to provide for at least 200 children.
“This is a little more than last year,” Lasker said. “The need is greater than ever for a lot of families, and with the current economic situation, sponsors are getting fewer.”
People desiring to help can contact Lasker at 652-6534. She will respond with a name of a child needing help along with the appropriate information for that child.
For those who want to participate, but would prefer someone else to do the shopping, a check can be made out to Child and Family Service Kauai with the memo “Backpack Brigade” and one of the Guildas will do the shopping.
Lasker said Kukui Grove Center will be gifting the use of a space where collected backpacks will remain until case workers from CFS will deliver the school supplies laden packs to families and children.
Checks should be mailed to Sharon Lasker, P.O. Box 531, Kalaheo, Hawaii 96741.
