LIHUE — Police detained a 14-year-old male from Lihue in connection with a brush fire Monday afternoon.
Firefighters were dispatched to Kalepa Ridge about 2:30 p.m. Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 arrived about 2:50 p.m. and utilized water drops to quickly extinguish the blaze.
Police were called after fire officials and other witnesses reported seeing two teenage males leaving the scene of the fire. Following a preliminary investigation, one of the juveniles was detained. He has since been released to his parent.
Fire officials estimate that less than 1,000 square feet of a vegetated area was burned in the fire.
“While we are very fortunate that this situation was contained quickly and there were no injuries, it does not minimize the extent of damages brush fires can cause,” said Kauai Police Chief Darryl Perry.
