KALAHEO — Daesen Martinez magnetized the hoop for 14 points and Tevita Vaenaku poured in nine points to lead the fifth grade boys Team Lihue Warriors to a 37-23 win over Westside Basketball on Monday night during the summer youth basketball league games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Josiah Delos Reyes led the Westside effort on 12 points — all in the second half — with Kelani Lewis and Javin Bagaoisan-Kaneakua adding five and four points respectively. Lewis notched his game-total in the first half, including a 3-pointer which was the sole trey in the match.
The game was just one of three as the summer youth basketball league returned to the hardwoods following the excitement of the Kauai Hoops Classic which wrapped up Sunday evening at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa and the Wilcox Gymnasium at Island School.
Team Lihue Warriors sixth grade division boys motored across the hardwoods. Its players appeared to be magnetized to the hoop as Kahi Apao finished the night with six points, four dropping in the second half.
The Warriors completed its sweep Monday night when Syrus Delos Reyes lit up the baskets for 19 points, including the team’s sole trey of the game, and Hans Carlos added 10 points to gain an early lead over Hanakila en route to locking up a 47-27 win.
Hanakila went to the three-ball to stay close in the first half. Ian Correa and Moku Ekolu-Tolenoa found the net from outside the three-point arc, but was held to just 11 points in the second half by the energetic Warrior defense.
Mayson Broyles and Aden Ringor each bucketed 14 points to lead the eighth grade boys division Supersonics to a 44-25 win over Isle Hoops in the final contest of the evening.
Luke Hunadi, playing formidable defense in the paint, topped the Isle Hoops scoring on 13 points.
The Warriors’ fifth grade boys and eighth grade boys take the floor Thursday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m.
Following that, there will be no summer youth basketball league games until July 6 because Kauai teams and coaches will be traveling to off-island tournaments.
