LIHUE — Two Kauai graduates are among 30 from Hawaii and prior enlisted members accepted into four of the U.S. service academies, and an additional 17 have been appointed to the U.S. service academy preparatory schools.
Of the 30 who have accepted appointments, 24 students and their parents were recognized at a reception hosted by the Military Affairs Council of the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii on May 31 at the Oahu Country Club. The students were honored by members of the MAC and alumni of U.S. military academies as they prepare to attend U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School, U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School and U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School.
The following were accepted into the academies and preparatory schools:
U.S. Military Academy:
w Kainalu Gandia (Kapaa High School 2016/U.S. Military Academy Prep School)
w Devon Hartsell (Waimea High School 2016/Greystone Prep)
In addition to the competitive nature of acceptance into these academies, members of Congress nominate candidates to the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
“Each year thousands of students, from across the country, who have demonstrated strong academic achievement, outstanding character and are committed to serving the nation apply to these prestigious military academies that have a limited number of available slots,” said David Carey, MAC chairman.
