Jiro Yukimura of Hanamaulu passed away on April 6, 2017, at the Garden Isle Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Lihue on Nov. 17, 1920, he was 96 years old.
A retired probation officer with the Family Court and a Military Intelligence Service (MIS) World War II veteran, Jiro was preceded in death by his parents, Hisakichi and Shima Yukimura and his brother Yoshio Yukimura.
He is survived by his wife, Jennie; five children: JoAnn Yukimura (John Wehrheim) of Lihue; John (Hinda) Yukimura of Edmonds, Washington; Miles Yukimura of Lihue; Kathy (Mark) Fertello of Brier, Washington; David Yukimura of Lihue; seven grandchildren: Maile Walters (Patrick) of Kalihiwai; Rachel Yukimura of Oakland, California; David Fertello of North Hollywood, California; Jesse Yukimura of Miami, Florida; Kara Fertello of Honolulu; and Audrey and Elise Yukimura of Lihue; and one great grandchild : Ualani Walters of Kalihiwai.
Jiro was a warm, unassuming man who loved his family and friends, the ocean and the outdoors, classical music, languages, painting, and playing his ukulele with a can of cold beer close by. He was a faithful Christian and a member of the Y’s Men Club, a service club to the YMCA. As a probation officer, he showed compassion with discipline; many of his clients remember with affection how he helped them get through a rough time of their lives. Jiro also had a keen sense of humor and a strong commitment to social justice. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Jiro’s life will be held on Saturday, July 15, at Lihue Christian Church with visitation from 9:30 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. The family suggests aloha or casual attire.
